7 Tips For Choosing Aquarium Fish

Buying the right aquarium fish for your tank is key to the success of your aquarium. When selecting fish, you may not simply be able to pick out the fish that catch your eye in the pet store as not all fish can live in the same environment. Additionally not all fish get along with each other so you will have to be careful to choose the types of fish that are compatible.

If all this seems like hard work, don’t worry, you will soon become familiar with the types of tropical fish that work well in your tank and even have some favorites that you like to keep. When choosing fish for your aquarium, here’s some tips to keep in mind:

1. Fish appearance. Observe the particular fish you are interested in carefully to make sure he is active and swimming around properly. Make sure his fins are not chewed and he doesn’t have any growths or white fuzzy patches.

2. Tank condition. Dealers tanks can have parasites and disease that might not be apparent in your fish right away so you need to observe the other fish in the tank and take a good look at the tank conditions. Is the tank clean? If not that is an indication that the dealer probably doesn’t care for the tanks well. Make sure the other fish in the tank are alert and swimming around actively. Avoid buying a fish from a tank that has dead fish floating in it. Even if your fish appears to be healthy, he could already be infected with something that might not show up until days after you get him home. By then it might be too late and you could risk infecting your other fish.

3. Water Conditions. The condition of your water is important as well as the number of fish you already have in the tank. If your water condition is poor then adding more fish will just make things worse and endanger the health of all the fish in the tank. Also, you should be careful not to overload your tank with too many fish as this will cause stress on all the fish as well as cause your water quality to degrade. The general rule of thumb for freshwater tropical fish tanks is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. If you add too many, you will have to spend more time changing the water and will need really good filtration in order to keep your tank healthy.

4. Water Temperature. Not all tropical fish like the same temperature water. While most will do well with temps in the mid 70′s some do better in cooler waters while others like it on the warm side.

5. Fish size. Before you buy a new fish you might want to find out how big he can be expected to eventually grow. Since your tank can support about 1 inch of fish per gallon, you wouldn’t want to put a fish that might grow to 5 inches in your 5 gallon tank or he might be the only one you can have!

6. The type of fish. Is your new fish aggressive or does he play well with others? Is he OK being the only one of his kind in the tank or will he do better in a school. Make sure you only put fish that will get along in the tank or the more aggressive fish will pick on the others. Also, some fish are territorial and you should only keep one per tank.

7. The food. Find out what type of food your new fish likes to eat. Most eat flakes, but some like freeze dried worms or other types of food. When you bring home your new fish be sure to also take home some of his favorite dinner.

Trout Fishing in Colorado – Here Are Some Techniques

One of the most famous places to fish for trout is Colorado. Would you like to know the greatest Colorado trout fishing techniques to help you have a successful run every fishing day?

There are many different methods which may be used in Colorado trout fishing. But, some of the basic techniques are:

Drift fishing

Float fishing

Jig fishing

Bottom Fishing

If you are doing Colorado trout fishing, chances are you will want to use one of these methods but which one, and how? How do you know when you use each?

Drift Fishing

As a general rule, drift fishing can be used in pretty much any condition and still be effective. The great thing about drift fishing is that it allows you to cover a large area of the water and present the bait to a larger number of trout, increasing your chances of getting a bite. Remember to only use just enough bait to cover the hook and no more.

You can start drift fishing by using a split shot approximately 12 to 24 inches from your hook. Adjust to water conditions accordingly (larger split shot and longer leader for deeper fast moving water) and use a small treble or salmon hook. Cast upstream from the fish and slowly reel in the slack line as the current pushes it downstream.

One thing about drift fishing for trout is that they tend to bite lightly so you really have to be paying attention to notice it or you may lose your opportunity to snag one.

Trout are often very particular about what they like to eat. You may fish in the same area two days in a row and have the trout enjoy the bait one day and dislike the same type of bait the next day. You can sometimes save yourself some time if you find out what other fishermen in the area are using. Also, try different colors of bait if one seems to not be working.

Float Fishing

Float fishing is similar to drift fishing but you use a floater (bobber) with it as well. Adjust your floater according to the depth of the trout in the water. Set the hook when you see a sudden movement on your floater (indicating a bite).

Jig Fishing

Jigs are a type of artificial lure that are very popular. They come in a variety of sizes (1/16-ounce to 1/256th of an ounce) and colors. Effective colors in trout fishing are yellow, olive, white, black, brown or a combination of colors. Immediately set the hook when you feel a strike on your lure. Avoid setting the hook on sight alone and rely more on feel. Like with the bait, you can experiment with different colors to find what is working best on a certain day.

Bottom Fishing

Bottom fishing may be the easiest yet effective method. (Don’t try this method in high water). Use your polarized glasses to spot trout in slow moving water. Rigging consists of using the desired hook with bait and crimping the appropriate split shot 12 to 24 inches above the hook. Cast your line upstream from the fish and let the bait settle to the bottom.

There is a lot of money to be made in bass fishing from tournaments, boat sponsors, along with many other bass related stuff that is on the market, such as clothes and other types of fishing gear.

When it comes to a bass habitat, they can be found almost anywhere that there is freshwater. The most popular places to find bass though are in rivers and lakes. Waters that are high in oxygen are the most likely places where you are going to find some hungry bass that are willing to bite.

When it comes to the types of bass, the largemouth is the one that most bass fisherman are out to catch. The reason is they get the biggest and they also put up one heck of a fight. 10 pound and above largemouth bass are very common to catch.

Some other types of freshwater fish that are also worthy to catch are the brown bullhead, along with the catfish. These fish are very fun to fight, not only are they very fun to fight they can make a great meal at the dinner table also. But when it comes to overall popularity, the bass still takes the crown of freshwater fishing.

All you really need is a pole and some bait to catch yourself some dinner when freshwater fishing. But if you are going for bass you will have to test the waters, you will have to test and try out different lures, as you will need different lures for different water conditions.

There are innumerable techniques and types of tackle available to practice the sport of bass fishing. For a beginner, it is advised to gather some more basic tools to get started. Some suggestions point towards acquiring a 10-pound line, suitable for the average sizes and weights of this species.

A good bait for bass, if you are clueless as to what you can use would be a Spinnerbait. Spinnerbaits are widely used by the professional anglers, along with the amateur anglers. Unless you are fly fishing for bass, I would stick with an artificial bait.

The catch and release method was first introduced in the 1950s. It was designed to reduce the rising costs of restocking hatchery-raised fish, and was normally used for fish not meant for consumption. Popular consensus does not consider bass as a food fish, and thus this technique is widely used.

by Craig Petersen

Successful surf fishing requires the right combination of skill, weather conditions and surf fishing equipment. Fishermen of all ages can enjoy learning to surf fish, and many locations offer lessons on surf fishing that cover topics such as surf fishing equipment, the fish to be caught, the water conditions and the skill’s basics.

A very important item to be covered during surf fishing lessons is the type of equipment and how it will function best for the ultimate fishing experience. Interestingly, there are few optimal pieces of surf fishing equipment, as everyone tends to have personal favorites.

Fishing rods work best in the surf if they are between 10 and 15 feet long, and the choice of rod length depends on what one is most comfortable with.

Tackle products such as weights, leaders, hooks and swivels are good to carry for a variety of feeders. Many surf fishermen use triple drop leaders, spider leaders or the pyramid leader. Once again, it is a personal preference and it is based on the type of fish that you are looking for.

It is often best to use bait caught from the same area when you are surf fishing a particular area. That is generally what the fish in the area feed on and what they generally will respond to. Consequently, you will do well to carry some smaller rods or nets in your surf fishing gear for catching the bait your prey prefers.

Moreover, landing nets are important to have when surf fishing. It is also best to have someone else along to help you bring the fish in with the help of a net. The specific net to use will depend on the type of fish that are in the area. Certainly, if your intended prey is a big fish, you will need to have a heavy-duty net handy.

Additionally, the type of water that you are fishing in determines the surf fishing equipment you should use, as good surf fishing is available in either fresh or salt water. Surf fishermen are known to enjoy fishing in rivers, lakes and other small bodies of water.

Surf fishing can also be great fun in the ocean and numerous fishermen surf fish for trophies in salt water. Fishing in the surf is a wonderful pastime for any age group in the family, as there are different sizes of prey to be found there. While wading through the surf, almost everyone will enjoy the sun sparkling on the water while waiting for the creatures moving beneath it.

From the east coast of the United States to the west coast, sport fishing for bass is one of the most enjoyed summertime sporting events. Professionals and amateurs enter tournaments as well as simply having a bass fishing weekend or go on daily trips to a favorite lake.

Besides being a significant sporting event, bass fishing is considered an art. To be successful, it is essential to be able to choose the best bass fishing lures to use based on the behavior of the fish, water temperature, seasonal movements, and water conditions.

There are plenty of freshwater bass fishing lures that are customarily used in places where bass are known to concentrate. The many kinds of bass include small and large-mouthed bass, peacock, spotted, stripped and white bass. Each one of these types is approached by using a different size and style of lure. Bass fishing lures often include the following:

Topwater baits – these lures are used on the surface of the water. They are designed to float and move across the water in order to attract bass that are feeding right below the surface. Topbaits may be buzzbaits or rattlebaits that utilize their movement through the water to make a vibration or sound to attract bass, or they may have tiny propellers that are there to make a splashing sound when breaking the surface of the water.

Crankbait – these bass fishing lures may be used at any water depth, from near the surface, mid-level and really deep. Depending on the depth of use and the action that you want to get from them, crankbaits can have a lip or may be lipless. These baits typically are shaped like very thick minnows and they are known to attract the fish due to the of the movements they make going through the water, when the lure is “cranked” or reeled in.

Crankbait – these bass fishing lures may be used at any water depth including deep, mid-level, or very close to the top. Crankbaits come with or without a lip, which is dependent on the depth at which they are used and the action that the fisherman desires to get from them. Crankbaits are most often shaped to resemble thick minnows and they attract fish when they move through the water while the lure is being reeled in.

Topwater baits – these particular bass fishing lures are used on the water’s surface. They float and are moved in order to attract bass feeding just below the surface. Topbaits are usually rattlebaits or buzzbaits and actually utilize the movement along the surface of the water to produce a sound or vibration that helps attract bass. Or, they may have small propellers to make a splashing sound when they are cutting through the surface of the water.

Bass fishing lures also may include live bait fish, trolling baits, and worms. Most often, the lures will be brightly colored for fishing in bright conditions and in deep waters. More naturally-colored lures are used for fishing in the typical shallow and the cloudy water near the shoreline.

Fly fishing is a very old pursuit that has fed and entertained millions of people while it also provides the chance for a much-needed vacation. In today’s busy world, working people have many restrictions and pressures on their time; and, without some much-needed rest and relaxation, even the strongest are capable of getting exhausted.

Nothing offers a vacation as restful as fly fishing. There are no ringing phones, alarm clocks, screaming children or unappreciative employers. There is only the water, the beautiful wildlife, the fish and you enjoying it all.

Where else can you stand in water while marveling at the incredible wildlife around you? How about the rustle of the wind in lush trees and sweet smells of the wild flowers around you? That sounds so very wonderful, doesn’t it? Let’s go now!

Anglers or novices can take a fly-fishing vacation in just about any geographical location of the world. Fly fishing can be the fishing method of choice in rivers, lakes, streams, ponds and even the oceans. Most fly fishermen fish for trout, catfish, carp, salmon and much bigger fish in the sea.

Fly fishing is an exciting way to catch the fish you want. The fish are fooled with an enticing artificial fly or other insect on the water’s surface. Fly fishing requires a little practice, but it makes for a wonderful outdoor vacation.

Using a guide is especially recommended if you are on a tight time schedule. One can point you in the right direction from the beginning. If you need help, there are many fly-fishing guides who would be glad to give you some instruction. They know all the best places, water conditions and particulars of the sport.

There are many places to fish that offer great vacation packages for families who desire to enjoy the outdoors. These deals can include homes or cabins, fishing equipment, boats and lots of other amenities for a fly-fishing vacation. A popular trait about a fly fishing vacation is that it is in the outdoors, away from intrusive food and toy vendors or other distractions. Consequently, your children can enjoy free activities such as hiking, swimming, exploring, and fishing. Such a vacation that is reasonably priced, fun and relaxing can be a very welcome change from expensive theme parks and long road trips.

Many outfitters can be found at lakes, rivers or oceans that are in business to rent fly-fishing equipment. Therefore, you can try it all without the unnecessary expense of buying it. Not everyone will have a need for high end fly-fishing equipment, and renting some can be a great way to see what works for you. Even life vests and boats can usually be rented. There is nothing quite like being immersed in nature’s bounty while providing the food for your family that you caught and prepared. As a result, your kids will always remember the trip; and, that is a promise.
