Trout Fishing

Trout fishing has taken on two completely different characteristics in the last twenty years. One type is the annual stocking of the hatchery-raised trout to support a fishing event, and the second is the time-honored wild trout fishing.

Trout fishing has become so popular that cities and civic organizations conduct trout derbies to spur fishing and encourage family participation. Even in waters that cannot support trout in the summer, the fish are stocked for special events. Local waters are temporarily transformed into trout streams and lakes in the late fall or early spring. These stocked fish are normally eight to twelve inches and are ready to be caught. The most effective way to fish these stocked trout is to use natural bait. Do not try live fast moving bait such as minnows. These fish are farm raised and have never dined on live creatures unless they accidentally caught an insect. These fish are fed grain that is spread on the water and quickly floats to the bottom of the farm pond or hatchery. These type of trout are generally bottom feeders. When fishing stocked trout use salmon eggs, worms, or corn. Use a small hook baited well. Trout have small mouths requiring a hook they can get in their mouths. If the bottom has a great deal of structure and you keep getting tangled then use a float with a long leader. A long leader will keep the bait out of the tangles and deep enough for the normal eating depth of the trout.

Fishing for wild trout is totally different. Artificial bait should be your bait of choice. If the fishing is slow and you decide to try fresh bait, be sure to use a float. Trout in the wild feed on the top of the water requiring anglers to keep the bait close to the surface whether fishing in a fast moving stream or a lake. Be sure to use a clear float tied above the bait. This reduces the chance the fish will the see the unnatural float and scurry away. When fishing fast-moving water with natural bait, tie the float four feet above the baited hook. When fishing natural bait in a lake, tie the float as high on the line as possible. This will keep the bait suspended but below the surface. After trying some still fishing for a while, start a slow retrieve. Reel very slowly. This slow retrieve will create a moving target about four inches below the water surface. Only use baited hooks when all else fails.

Many expert trout fisherman use only flies. Many streams are in protected wildlife areas are fly-fishing only waters and often only allow “catch and release” angling. When fly fishing, gather local information to determine the best fly to use. Choices will vary based on water temperature, season, drought, flow volume and other natural factors. Seek the advice of another fisherman or a local tackle store. After selecting the fly, study the water patterns and look for spots that offer deep bank cuts, overhead cover or pools behind and down stream from rocks. Cast the fly above your target zone and let it drift through it. Repeat this action several times. For some variety, add a split shot three to four feet above the fly. This extra weight will drop the fly below the surface a couple of inches and might attract a trout that is lurking a bit deeper. If you decide to use artificial bait such as a Mepps spinner, be sure to start with one sixteenth of an ounce. If rapid water keeps the bait bouncing above the water surface, tie on a heavier spinner until you get a retrieval track two to three inches below the surface. When fishing fast moving water, cast the bait into the center of the flow and let it drift down stream. As the bait drifts it will naturally drift back towards the shoreline. If you are wading you have some flexibility as to the distance the retrieve can be executed from the bank. If you are fishing from the bank, then extend your fishing rod over the water to keep the bait a safe distance from the shoreline. If you spot a ripple or a pool of calm water behind a boulder or part of a depth change, cast across the water and above the target. Experiment until you get the correct casting distance to reel the bait through the pool. Never cast once into a likely target and give up. It make take several casts over the same water to generate a trout rise. Remember to allow your bait to drift past the target water and then reel the bait back through the target water. When retrieving, move the rod tip from side to side. This movement pattern changes the look of the bait and often entices the strike. The retrieve itself should be match the speed of the water flow. The faster the stream is moving; the slower the retrieve. Let the speed of rushing water spin the blade of the bait instead of reeling at a steady gait. In fact, the speed of the retrieve should change during every cast. The bait will cross fast and rushing water requiring the retrieve to slow down in fast water and speed up in slower water.

In all cases, scout the fishing grounds for cutouts next to banks, pools, ripples, overhanging trees or brush and boulders. Trout tend to wait in these areas for insects to pass overhead or to just rest. Trout do strike very hard and fight viciously. They die quickly when out of the water or handled improperly. If you are going to catch and release, or you hook an under-sized fish; wet your hands, carefully remove the hook and gently release the trout back to Mother Nature.

Trout Fishing in Colorado – Here Are Some Techniques

One of the most famous places to fish for trout is Colorado. Would you like to know the greatest Colorado trout fishing techniques to help you have a successful run every fishing day?

There are many different methods which may be used in Colorado trout fishing. But, some of the basic techniques are:

Drift fishing

Float fishing

Jig fishing

Bottom Fishing

If you are doing Colorado trout fishing, chances are you will want to use one of these methods but which one, and how? How do you know when you use each?

Drift Fishing

As a general rule, drift fishing can be used in pretty much any condition and still be effective. The great thing about drift fishing is that it allows you to cover a large area of the water and present the bait to a larger number of trout, increasing your chances of getting a bite. Remember to only use just enough bait to cover the hook and no more.

You can start drift fishing by using a split shot approximately 12 to 24 inches from your hook. Adjust to water conditions accordingly (larger split shot and longer leader for deeper fast moving water) and use a small treble or salmon hook. Cast upstream from the fish and slowly reel in the slack line as the current pushes it downstream.

One thing about drift fishing for trout is that they tend to bite lightly so you really have to be paying attention to notice it or you may lose your opportunity to snag one.

Trout are often very particular about what they like to eat. You may fish in the same area two days in a row and have the trout enjoy the bait one day and dislike the same type of bait the next day. You can sometimes save yourself some time if you find out what other fishermen in the area are using. Also, try different colors of bait if one seems to not be working.

Float Fishing

Float fishing is similar to drift fishing but you use a floater (bobber) with it as well. Adjust your floater according to the depth of the trout in the water. Set the hook when you see a sudden movement on your floater (indicating a bite).

Jig Fishing

Jigs are a type of artificial lure that are very popular. They come in a variety of sizes (1/16-ounce to 1/256th of an ounce) and colors. Effective colors in trout fishing are yellow, olive, white, black, brown or a combination of colors. Immediately set the hook when you feel a strike on your lure. Avoid setting the hook on sight alone and rely more on feel. Like with the bait, you can experiment with different colors to find what is working best on a certain day.

Bottom Fishing

Bottom fishing may be the easiest yet effective method. (Don’t try this method in high water). Use your polarized glasses to spot trout in slow moving water. Rigging consists of using the desired hook with bait and crimping the appropriate split shot 12 to 24 inches above the hook. Cast your line upstream from the fish and let the bait settle to the bottom.

by Chipper Blakey

The most important piece of equipment to fly fishermen is the fly fishing reel. There are many different kinds of reels as well as there are different kinds of rods for different situations. It is not necessary to lay down a bunch of money for a new reel, although you can if you would like. A basic no frills fly reel will do in just about any situation, and if you do your homework and choose wisely, you will not have a need to replace it for many years.

Most trout fishermen strip their fly line manually rather than using the handle. Most fishermen will tell you that it is quicker to do it by hand, and you get more of a feel for the placement of your lure by keeping the line in your hand.

Depending on the situation that you are in, sometimes it is better to reel the line in manually and sometimes it is preferable to use the handle. When following a large fish most people prefer to use the handle for better control. Another situation to use the handle is when you have thick foliage and there is a chance of getting your line caught. If you are moving around in the water a lot, using the handle is a good idea.

Fishermen who reel their line in the most frequent are salmon fishermen. The reason of this is because more often than not, salmon fishermen will be in the water fishing. Trout reels are usually smaller than salmon reels, and are normally not as efficient in reeling line in as salmon reels are.

Technology is improving by leaps and bounds due to research companies like Sage in the fly fishing industry. Also fly fishing equipment is getting lighter with the use of graphite. A lot of your veteran fly fishermen prefer the older reels with a bit of weight in them to maintain the balance that they are familiar with.

If you have your eye on a new fly fishing reel, consider purchasing two so that you will have a backup. You will not want to have only one reel when it goes bad in the field. A trick to help you in your decision is to mark your line weight so there will be no guesswork involved. You will save yourself a lot of time when preparing for your fishing trip.

It is a good idea to get a storage bag for your extra fishing reels for protection. Most of the time backup reels find themselves in the bottom of tackle boxes for extended periods of time. Free reels in the bottom of tackle boxes can get damaged, and you might not realize this until it is needed.

As a salmon fisherman most people prefer to have different rods, which will save on time in having to change out reels and line. Most salmon enthusiasts will have two complete rod and reel setups, one for sunk line fishing and one for float rods.

Doing your research of what you will be fishing for and in what situations will move you one step closer in choosing the right Reel for your situation. There are numerous places on the web such as Ebay for choices on used fly fishing equipment.

There are many ways to fish for trout, but few are more effective than bait fishing. Let’s take a look at some tips to help you be more effective when bait fishing for these multi-colored beauties. We can sum it up in three easy steps.

When done properly, which this article will help you with, bait fishing for trout is as much of an art form as any manner of fishing has ever been proclaimed to be. Below you will find three main points to keep in mind, all of which will make you a much more efficient and effective trout angler.

The first thing you need to do is use light fishing line. When bait fishing for trout you want to use fishing line that’s as light as you feel comfortable with. I personally use four pound test monofilament when bait fishing. Actually four pound test is that I use for all of my trout fishing. Six pound test is okay as well, but anything heavier than this should not be employed. You want your bait to be what the trout stay focused on, and the heavier your fishing line is the more apt the trout are to see it.

Use a bait bag. When bait fishing, many times that bait is live worms, and when using live worms as bait you need to have and efficient and effective way to carry said worms. The simplest way to accomplish this task is to use a bait bag. With a bait bag your worms are always at your fingertips waiting to be used and you’ll never have to search for your bait again. This simple act, gives you more time with your line in the water (where the trout are) rather than out of the water while you look for your worms.

Use the right kind of hooks. Gang hooks are the most effective way to present bait while fishing. This is especially true in the case of live worms. These hooks are simply a pair of small hooks tied in tandem, which enable you to present bait in a realistic manner. This makes a huge difference when bait fishing for trout. The more that your bait looks like it does in nature the more bites you will get; it’s as simple as that. Always use gang hooks when bait fishing for trout, or any other species of fish for that matter.

Take these simple tips, and you will have a great time fishing. Use one or all of them on your next fishing excursion and find out for yourself just how great these tips are.

by Bob Smith

Every person who fishes has their favorite type of bait. It probably comes from successfully using the bait on several occasions. Then the result? It’s a great bait.

Crawfish was my bait of choice when I was in Missouri. You just couldn’t beat them for trout or a small mouth bass. But I haven’t had much luck finding crawfish in other places. But I will say this, if you can find these little crawdads as they are called in Louisiana, buy and use them. Crawfish are a great way of attracting fish.

I like using live bait when I can. Live minnows are probably one of the most popular live bait fish around. But unless you’re working from a boat, it’s a pain lugging the bait bucket.

Live worms have long been the subject of comedy routines. People just don’t know how to put a worm on a hook. When a gang hook is used a worm stretches out and looks natural. The fish don’t get suspicious and you catch more fish.

Some people won’t have anything to do with live bait. Don’t know if they are squeamish or just lazy. Really doesn’t matter. Some of the newer synthetic bait is just amazing. And in some instances I can say the synthetic baits are coming darn close to live bait. Now synthetic bait comes in every shape, form and bait you can think of, and some you probably haven’t thought of. Synthetic bait offers convenience and the ability to pick up and go fishing without having to stopping by a bait shop.

You know when it comes down to choice it’s really about fishing and not just talking. You can talk about bait, debate the merits of this type vs that type. But without fishing you’ll never be a good fisherman. So try out various baits, but get out there and fish.
