by Kyle Zoltowski

You cannot deny the beautiful serenity and tranquility in standing shin-deep in a bubbling clear river waiting for the nicest trout to notice the fly and proceed after it.

Fly fishing is tranquil and peaceful way to leave the city, job, obligations, and other responsibilities behind. Though, when while in the stream whipping your fly from back to front, you should know that you have the best equipment for fishing. Not all fly fishing products are the same or created for the same situations and/or fish.

To begin, the line you select should handle the types of fish that are living in the brook, stream, or river you wish to fish. Also, the weight of the reel and rod should equal the weight of the line you want to use. So, knowing what you are trying for is key in determining what type of line, rod, and reel you will need.

After the above, you have to figure out the size of fly that should be used as bait. If you are fishing for trout weighing from 1-6 pounds, a little to medium fly should be used. This is the the most well-known type of fly fishing; trout are the most sought after fish using a little to medium sized fly. But, fly fishing rods and reels can also be used for going after Bass, Steelhead, Salmon, and a variety of saltwater fish. These other breeds of fish require different flies; they will ignore small or medium sized flies.

Another big part of fly fishing is the rod. There are two main materials that a rod can be built with: fiberglass or graphite. Fiberglass rods are typically less expensive and very durable. Graphite rods, though, are more expensive but are considered to be more accurate with casting. In deciding on a rod, you should also think about the action of the rod. The action of the rod is the give or stiffness of a rod when casting or start to reel in a fish; there are basically three types: slow, medium, and fast-action. Slow-action rods have the most bend or flexibility and are best for reeling in small to medium sized fish. Therefore, fast-action rods are for larger fish. Fast-action rods have minimal flexibility and are great for crankingin large fish. Medium rods are a good in between choice because they are best for the ease of use for beginners and have the potential to bring in large catches from far out on the river.

Lastly, to be good at fly fishing, you have to pick the correct length for your rod. The method is very much like that of picking the action. The shorter rods are suitable for small fish, the medium for medium sized, and the long are for big, heavy fish. The longer the rod, the more simple it is to cast far and bring in mammoth fish. But, some people have been said to bring a short rod also in case of obstructions like bushes, shrubs, trees, and other plants; shorter rods make it easy to cast over and around these things.

by Paul Mancini

Very few sporting activities can match the tranquility that a person can enjoy while sitting out on the water in a boat, rod in hand, waiting for a fish to take the bait. It’s an almost curative experience, so it certainly should not come as any surprise that fishing is one of the most favorite recreational activities in the United States.

Some ardent fishing advocates will tell you that your performance at fishing can only be as good as your equipment so it’s important to buy a good fishing rod. Unfortunately when you’re new to fishing you might not have the ability to discern the good from the not so good, so here are a couple of tidbits that can help you in picking a fishing rod of your choice that will serve you for a very long time.

When buying a fishing pole you will be boggled by the massive range of rod choices in front of you. One way of selecting is to go into the local angling shop and pick the first fishing rod that you lay your eyes on but this may not be a very effective strategy. Another way would be to weigh the aspects of each rod.

Pole Weight – Gone are those days when rods were all made out of bamboo. Technological advancements have now reached the rod industry and today most rods are made out of synthetic composite materials. Most fishing poles fall within 1 of 4 weight categories: light action, medium light action, medium heavy action and heavy action. What category a particular fishing rod falls under is usually mentioned on it. The differing weights are used to catch different types of fish, so before you purchase a pole you need to decide what types of fish you want to catch with it. As a rule, if you’re fishing for trout or small mouth, go for an ultra light action fishing rod. The medium and the medium heavy action fishing rods are more suitable for catching small pike and musky while the really heavy action fishing rods will be more appropriate for large Catfish and large Carp. I am sure by now you see a pattern emerging, that is the weight of the fishing rod should be proportional with the weight of the fish you catch with it.

Pole Length – The length is the next variable that you need to look at with respect to your purchase. The length that you choose will be driven by the location where you intend to go fishing. A more lengthy fishing pole can be expected to put more pressure on the fish when it’s on the hook. So if you are likely to go fishing in a river you probably want to purchase a longer fishing rod. Of course because the rod is longer you will want to select the ultra light or a light action rod for your comfort. A five foot rod is usually good for average water conditions while a 6 foot rod is what you’d use for rapidly flowing water.

Lastly you’ll also have to decide as to the amount of money you wish to spend. Many fishing enthusiasts will tell you to not exceed a seventy dollar budget. Usually fishing rods that fall in this price range are extremely functional and you’ll find a number of wonderful rods under this price.

No fisherman can win with sheer talent alone. No matter how talented a fisherman is, if his equipment is not good enough, his chances of landing a consistent haul will remain slim. That is because his equipment will hinder rather than help his ability. Just as a tennis player needs a great racket, the same goes for a fisherman’s fishing pole.

Fishing is a great sport that many people find enjoyable. It is always a great challenge to get an elusive trout to strike the bait, but casting for hours while wading in a cool stream can be quite relaxing. Regardless of the challenge and the relaxation that fishing offers, the ultimate goal of fishing is still to catch some fish. Barring some bad luck and circumstances that are really unfavorable for fishing, a good fishing rod is a necessity for a good fish.

If you are a beginner at fishing, it’s perfectly all right to use a simple fishing rod and reel – nothing too snappy and nothing elaborate. If you’re just getting your feet wet with this great sport, you should consider employing a fishing guide to give you a few pointers. You may also garner a tip or two on which fly rod to buy.

A simple fishing rod is good for those just starting out. Once you have gained a few experience points with this form of angling, you might want to consider a better fly fishing pole that is designed for more advanced users, a fly rod that will really get your game going. In this case, how do you choose a fly fishing pole that is just right for your needs? In order for one to make this decision, you need to know what kind of fish you’ll be attempting to catch. Different types of fish are caught using different length fly rods and different weights of tackle.

Flexibility is another trait to consider when selecting a fly fishing pole. It is important that your fly rod is flexible, something that can withstand the weight of the particular fish and something that will not spring back at your nose when you are fighting against a struggling fish. When shopping for a fishing pole, do not hesitate to hold it in your hand and make a few false casts to see how it performs.

Once you’ve found a fly rod that you think is right for you, go ahead and buy it. A good fly fishing rod is an investment, and if you choose well, it can last you a lifetime if you maintain it properly.

If you’re still not too sure just what kind of fly fishing pole you should purchase then go ahead and buy a couple of secondhand fly poles. Once you have found the right fly fishing rod to invest in, you can always sell your secondhand rods or keep them as backups.

As we’ve already said, a good fishing pole is a good investment that will give you a lifetime of angling enjoyment. But that will only happen if you take care of it properly. Maintaining a fly rod is simple – it only requires regular cleaning and oiling.

To clean your fly rod, you start by removing the reel from the rod and washing the reel in warm water and drying it thoroughly. After that, get a screw driver and unscrew the reel plate so you could get a good look at the internals inside.

Once you have accomplished this, remove all the debris you find inside the reel with a few cotton tips. Be certain that you have cleaned every bit of dirt out. Only then, once the reel is clean, oil the gears inside the reel and replace the reel plate.

Fly fishing is a truly enjoyable hobby, but to get the most enjoyment out of it, you need to use a fly fishing rod that works well for you. When you have already invested in a nice fly rod, protect your investment by maintaining it regularly.

Some people might not think that choosing the right fishing line would be so complex but it is. You need to pick the line that’s best for the kind of fish you’re fishing for. There are some other factors that will come into play as well. The line you use is the absolutely most important item your tackle box.

This major role will determine if you have successful day fishing or go home without any fish at all. There are enormous amounts of available line on the market today; however choosing the right fishing line can be very easy as long as you know what you actually are looking for.

To be a good fisherman you need to understand the pros vs. the cons of the line you’re using. The line is your lifeblood. A lot of fishermen get confused about choosing the best fishing line. This is mostly caused by them being uneducated in the many choices that’s on the market today.

One of the more popular lines out today is the monofilament line. This line was produced in 1938 and was made by DuPont. This is a synthetic super polymer which makes textile fibers like silk, cotton, wool and rayon stronger. This line is used by many for basic lake fishing. If your going to be doing some deep sea fishing then choosing this line wouldn’t be a good choice when choosing the right fishing line because you’ll need a lot of line strength and this just doesn’t have it.

Braided line was the most popular of the strings before nylon was discovered. However, braided Dacron had very poor strength and the knots were just too shady to make a real difference. It has very little stretch so, if you are looking to catch a fish that is going to put up a bit of a fight, this string will not do the job.

Another popular polymer line is Fluorocarbon, this can be a great pick when choosing the right fishing line. This line has a identical refractive index making it practically invisible in the water. It won’t absorb water either. This will make the line last for a very long time.

Super lines will require special attention. Fluorocarbon is a super line. To get the best possible result when using this line we recommend a Trilene knot. Always make sure you wet the line when knotting it. This will give you a more secured knot. This will also keep your line from weakening over time. As with any line make sure you test it before using it. There have been many lost lures because people just don’t test the line before using it.

Choosing the right fishing line may seem more complex than it really is and will become easier for the years of practice. Always remember to choose the line that will best fit your needs when it comes to the type of fish you’ll be catching and water you’ll be in.

by John Andrews

One of the best bass fishing lures of all time has to be the plastic worm. The plastic worm has probably caught more fish than any other kind of bait out there. The plastic worm lets you skim for fish or you can bottom fish as well with these handy lures.

The plastic worm comes in sizes from 3 inches to over 10 inches long. They are available in array of colors. What ever the size or color you choose they all do the same thing and that is catching bass. They can be rigged different ways to make it more interesting when trying to catch the big one!

Crank-baits are another top favorite. They look like crawfish and bait-fish, 2 of the bass’ primary food sources. They work in all types of water conditions and can be quite the competitor in your arsenal of enticing lures.

Spinner-baits are known to catch a great deal of bass and they are very good bait for covering a lot of water quickly to find fish. In addition they tend to catch much larger bass than other lures on the market. They vary in style and come in an assortment of blades, colors and sizes.

Still used all around the world and arguably the best lure ever is the jig and pig.

Fishermen worldwide win a good percentage of tournaments every year by using the jig and pig lures. The lure looks like a crawfish from the bottom of the water. One of basses favorite foods are crawfish.

The most common lure is a buck-tail Jig. The buck-tail lure is responsible for saving many lives to this day because of its dependability. Most of all your survival kits include this lure. This lure is capable of catching bass under any condition and just might be for best friend in bad situations.

Topwater plugs will bring you excitement as the bass nearly dives out of the water for this one. The smashing splash of the bass is exhilarating and will find you reaching for the topwater lure more and more often if you are one who is into the excitement of fishing and the anticipation.
One of the most difficult and oldest forms of fishing is fly-fishing. Because fly-fishing is not as popular as it was years ago, there has been shortage in fly-fishing gear. Over the last decade fly fishing has started to become more popular again, due to this fact fly fishing gear is starting to become popular again as well.

Fly-fishing gear tends to have a dark side. There are many different components that one needs to fly fish properly. The fancy terminology that is commonly used and the rather steep prices fly fishermen have to pay for good gear, has all conspired to compose selecting the right fly fishing gear a rather difficult choice.

Some necessities of fly-fishing bear are, a fly fishing rod, fishing without a rod cannot be done. A fly reel, which is what holds the line and reels it in. A fly line is also a necessity because a person cannot catch a fish without a line.

These three items are absolutely necessary gears that have to be purchased in order to fly fish. Purchasing these items at a discounted price should be avoided. These items should be the ones that the most money is spent on, because they are what guarantees a good fly-fishing experience and the ability to fly fish at all.

A fly vest should be worn while fly fishing, this hold all eh flies and little equipment that is used while fishing, since a person is wading in the water when they are fly fishing. Wading boots should be worn at all times, that way the fisherman has good balance and is not getting his or her feet messed up. The last item is waders; this will protect the fisherman’s body, and not scare the fish away, being that it blends into the water.

Wearing the three tackles listed above are not necessary but strongly advised. These items will help to protect the fisherman and make catching fish a little easier. The wading boots are the most important out of the three, because they are what is in the water at all times.

A fly fisherman should carry with him or her a variety of different flies to cast and a tackle box. Fly-fishing sunglasses should be worn as well. The glasses will help the fisherman to see the fish and cast the fly correctly.

Fly-fishing gear is a lot of money and there is so much gear that is needed to fly fish. A person should be cautious when purchasing fly gear for a discounted price; they need to ask themselves why it is being discounted. The clothes that need to be worn during fly fishing do not need to be the best quality, cheap quality will get the job done.

When it comes to the reel and rod always consider why it is discounted. Sunglasses should be cautioned as well. Most fly-fishing gear will last a long time, but because it is so expensive a person should really consider what is worth spending more money on and what will last the longest.
