How to Tie Catfish Fishing Rigs

Anglers everywhere look forward to the challenge that fishing for catfish provide because they are one of the most popular species of fish around. When fishing for trophy catfish you need to be prepared and have the equipment to reel them in. These fish have been known to snap rods, break lines and completely destroy the drag on reels. Regardless of whether you are catfishing for that trophy fish or going out for fun, using rigs is the best method to reel them in.

There are three main types of catfish fishing rigs that are used by anglers everywhere. These are called the Texas Rig, Carolina Rig and the Floating Rig. The more you know about these rigs and the way to use them the better your odds will be when fishing for catfish. Below are the basic instructions on how to tie each one of these rigs along with a brief description about each one and where they should be used.

The Texas Rig

The Texas rig is mainly used with plastic worms. The hook is placed through the thickest part of the worm right below the head. You need to push it up all the way to the eye of the hook. You will then put the tip of the hook halfway through the body of the worm about three forth of the way to the tail.

Make sure that it does not go all the way through. This prevents the hook from snagging on anything while you are fishing.

The first step in tying a Texas rig is to choose the type of knot you want to use. The clinch knot seems to work the best for many anglers. Next, you need to place your sinker on the line first with the large end facing towards the hook. Use the clinch knot to tie the hook securely onto the line and then you are ready for the bait. This is a very simple rig to sit up.

The Texas rig can be used most anywhere and it makes casting your line very accurate. It works well when fishing in areas that are grassy or rough where hooks can get hung up easily. It is the perfect rig to use when you need your bait to bump the bottom of the water so you can reel it up a bit and then let it float back down to the bottom again.

Examples Of Walleye Fishing Rigs And How To Set Them Up

Walleye are among the top list of those elusive fish that anglers love to chase after. The challenge in pulling one into the boat adds to the thrill of the hunt. Walleye do not give up with a fight. This can make the catch near impossible at times but it is not an impossible task by any means. All it takes is having the right techniques to have and when to execute them to pull a mighty walleye into the boat.

One of the best physical features of walleye is their ability to reflect light. This strength gives the fish an amazing ability to see clearly in dark or muddy waters. For this reason dim light times of day are their favorite feeding times.

Walleye come to the surface at dawn before the sun has a chance to shine bright in the sky. Once that sun makes its move to a higher position in the sky, the walleye instinctually head for deeper, darker waters.

At night walleye prefer menu selections of night crawlers, small plugs, bullheads, leeches and minnows. Feeding times for walleye are from dusk to dawn. These are the hours when the waters are at their darkest points and walleye can do their best hunting. These are also the hours anglers need to strike with the best rig combinations known in the fishing community.

Effective Walleye Fishing Rigs

At any time during the hunt for walleye, there are several options an angler can select from to reel one off the line. The simplest yet most effective way has four elements that work tremendously when placed together on a single line. The four elements are a lead weight; spinner blade; beads and a hook. Sure there are fancier elements to place on a line in a variety of combinations. The end results will not be nearly as effective as with this combination.

The key here is lead weight head jig. Walleye love lead weight head jigs. This could be due to any number of things. Among them being at times of pickiness, walleye view the lead head jig as a strange yet familiar object in the water.

They strike almost without warning in order to not let this object slip away. Anglers welcome the walleye favoritism for jigs. It is among the most affordable options for anglers. A variety of colors and sizes are available on the market allowing anglers to mix it up every now and then.

Two variations of lead head jigs are available. One is a flip tail jig and the other is a skirt tail jig. Pair either one with a minnow or other live bait selection on the hook for great results. Walleye prefer crawfish, small crustaceans and night crawlers for food selections. Keep a healthy stock of each in the tackle box to keep walleye on the end of the line.

The second type of effective walleye rig is the Blakemore Roadrunner. This type has been around almost as long as walleye have been manning the waters. Even so it is still a highly popular and effective rigging technique to reel in the elusive walleye. One of the favorite aspects to this rig is the fact that it can not be used incorrectly.

Every person who fishes has their favorite type of bait. It probably comes from successfully using the bait on several occasions. Then the result? It’s a great bait.

Crawfish was my bait of choice when I was in Missouri. You just couldn’t beat them for trout or a small mouth bass. But I haven’t had much luck finding crawfish in other places. But I will say this, if you can find these little crawdads as they are called in Louisiana, buy and use them. Crawfish are a great way of attracting fish.

I like using live bait when I can. Live minnows are probably one of the most popular live bait fish around. But unless you’re working from a boat, it’s a pain lugging the bait bucket.

Live worms have long been the subject of comedy routines. People just don’t know how to put a worm on a hook. When a gang hook is used a worm stretches out and looks natural. The fish don’t get suspicious and you catch more fish.

Some people won’t have anything to do with live bait. Don’t know if they are squeamish or just lazy. Really doesn’t matter. Some of the newer synthetic bait is just amazing. And in some instances I can say the synthetic baits are coming darn close to live bait. Now synthetic bait comes in every shape, form and bait you can think of, and some you probably haven’t thought of. Synthetic bait offers convenience and the ability to pick up and go fishing without having to stopping by a bait shop.

You know when it comes down to choice it’s really about fishing and not just talking. You can talk about bait, debate the merits of this type vs that type. But without fishing you’ll never be a good fisherman. So try out various baits, but get out there and fish.

I thought it would be interesting to ask professional and amateur bass anglers alike a very tricky question, and that question was as follows:

“If you could only choose one lure to use in the bass fishing tournament of your life, what lure would that be – and why?”

I was blown away at the feedback that I received. I expecting the majority to say something along the lines of a worm or maybe even a spinnerbait. Hands down over 90% of anglers surveyed said that they would use a crankbait. Once I began reading the reasons why it began to make since to me. The general consciences was that a crankbait could be fished anywhere. It could be fished on top of the water, everywhere in between and all the way to the bottom. Other fans of using a crankbait to fish the tournament of your life suggested that adding weight to make the crankbait suspend in the water.

Other fellow bass fishermen suggested using a crankbait with a large bill when fishing in heavy cover. They claim that the bill will act as a guard for the hooks. One bass fisherman even went as far as to say that you should cut off the bottom hook on the treble, to make the crankbait weedless.

Crankbait Tips Submitted by Users
Tip#1: Whenever fishing in 10 to 12 feet water you should use a crankbait that will run 15 feet. As most anglers know most crankbaits will not run as deep as the maker advertises.

Tip#2: The lighter your line, the deeper your crankbait will go. If you put your rod tip down into the water, your crankbait will run about a foot or so deeper than if your line was on the surface.

Tip#3: Plastic crankbaits will be easier to cast than wooden ones, but by and large wooden ones have better action and more buoyancy than plastic ones.

Tip#4: When it comes to crankbaits remember flat-sided cranks have a tighter wobble and will work better in cooler water. A stop-and-go retrieve will out produce a steady one every time.

Tip#5: In off-colored water, no matter what your lure color might be use one with rattles. In clear water, go with smaller baits and subdued hues.

Tip#6: If you find a crankbait that seems to really catch fish you should mark it and only use it in tournaments.

Tip#7: If it is your first time fishing a lake, or it is pre-fish day before a tournament it’s always good to use a crankbait because you can cover way more territory faster.

There are many rules of angling that you need to learn to participate in this exciting sport. This is a form of sports similar to hunting, where you need to observe important rules and the environment so what you do will not leave any adverse effects on the environment and the people around you. Fishing has been around for a long time and will continue to be a part of man’s economic activity. Modern technological developments have changed the way people fish, but many of the same rules, regulations, and social norms involving fishing remain.

It is crucial to observe good angling habits as they are necessary to ensure the environment will be preserved for future generations. Have the decency to learn to leave the badly contaminated spots alone, and do to add to the existing damage. Do not upset the natural balance the ecosystem so do whatever you can to help maintain the environment so that they will be enjoyed by the future generations, it is good to help preserve the environment. This can be achieved simply by practicing good angling habits. Do not leave any trash behind when your fishing day has come to an end, always carry a bag to place it in. There are dumping stations provided use it. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out how this little act can go a long way in preserving the environment.

The correct type of fishing gear is necessary to make sure you get the maximum enjoyment possible. There are also limitations on the type of fish and the number you can keep. It is silly to check for them once you had arrived, your bait and hook may not be suitable. Ensure you know all those restrictions before you decide where to fish. See what kind of watercraft is allowed at each spot you want to go.

Some places have restrictions and it is possible to be prosecuted if you fish there. Sometimes they are just protecting the wildlife, but maybe there are hidden danger that they are protecting you from. As with all forms of hunting, safety comes first so if you are using a boat while you fish, always wear your life jacket, making sure that your passengers wear their life jackets, as well.

When removing bait or hooking, be careful, you don’t want a happy outing to turn into a heartbreaking disaster. If you fish in unauthorized waterways, you can get into serious trouble. Always take all relevant safety items, such as water, flashlights, maps, and a cell phone with you.

Today, fishing is a favorite past time of Americans, Canadian and Europeans. Do everything you can to help make fishing a part of the activity in the next century. Make it a rule to find ways to protect and preserve the environment around you and learn as much as is possible to become a better angler.

Many will say that jigs – heavy, lead-headed baits with a single hook are the most useful of baits to consider – especially when fishing in waters that are somewhat murky or clear. Jigs are good for attracting inactive fish and getting the attention of those who are buried deep. When using this type of lure, keep in mind that jigs are meant to create presentation, where success comes in making them appear noticeably alive. The ideal water temperature for this bass fishing lure is below 60 degrees. They are also perfect for night-fishing.

Jigs are lead-headed heavy baits with a single hook and considered by many to be the most useful of baits particularly when fishing in murky waters. Jigs catch the attention of inactive fish as well as drawing the fish of deeper waters. Whilst using this kind of lure remember that jigs are meant to create presentation so success is all about making them appear to be alive. The ideal temperature of the water for this type of bass fishing lure is less than 60 degrees which makes them perfect for night fishing trips.

The hassle of dealing with real worms is eliminated when using rubber selections that work just as well. An added weight in the structure of the lure allows a slow descent to the bottom of your fishing location. When lucky, bass strike at the rubber worm. If the lure reaches the bottom without any action, simply reel it back towards the surface and let it drop once again.

Spinner Baits

Try Spinner Baits

Crank Baits

Catch Them Out With Crank Baits

Crank lures work by imitating the motion of an injured fish and are used as top water lures or as sinkers. The noise made by these lures also helps to attract bass. To make the most of these lures, use a slow motion, just as would be made by an injured fish.

While poppers are similar to crank baits, they are set aside solely as a top water lure. As they travel across the water, a “popping” sound is emitted. The best time of year to use this lure is during the summertime, where slow reel action is required.

Grubs

Go For the Larger Catch with Grubs

Smallmouth bass are especially attracted to the very small lures known more commonly as grubs, which are geared towards larger catches. Grubs are bare jig heads with a soft body made of plastic which is added to a hook. When a highland reservoir is short of ample cover, this type of lure is extremely successful. White, yellow, salt and pepper, and smoke selections work best in clear, deep waters.

Target Your Bass with Tube Baits

When surrounded with inactive fish or angling in clear water, tube jigs target the bass wonderfully. This drop bait is best accommodated on a spinning reel on between six and six and a half foot of medium-light or medium action rod but the depth of water should be no more than ten feet when using this particular kind of bait.

Plastic or metal is used to create the vibrating lures that generate a tremor when retrieved out of the water. With a sound (much like a rattle), the baits sink to the bottom and do not get lost in particularly deep waters. A variety of lures are offered in this category, including tailspinners, which are heavy, compact baits of metal that uses a small spinner to attract the bass. Use vibrating lures when fishing about stumps, close to river currents, on deep channel drop-offs, and over waterlogged grass beds.

An assortment of lures is available in this category, including tail spinners, which are weighty, compact baits of metal that use a small spinner as a focus for the bass. The use of vibrating lures is best when fishing about stumps, close to the currents of rivers, over waterlogged grass and on deep channel drop offs.

Through the imitation of a weak or injured fish, crank lures are used as top water and sinking lures. The added cranking noise attracts bass with its sound. A slow approach is necessary in order to successfully imitate an injured fish.

While poppers are similar to crank baits, they are set aside solely as a top water lure. As they travel across the water, a “popping” sound is emitted. The best time of year to use this lure is during the summertime, where slow reel action is required.

If you’re a beginner in the world of carp fishing then a quick rundown of the most common types of carp fishing tackle is an excellent place to begin your education. We will deal with the most common types of carp fishing tackle; lures, flies, hooks, floats and sinkers. Once we have covered these basic elements you will have a better idea of what is needed to fill up your carp fishing tackle box.

Lures are the first, and possibly only, thing people think of when they hear the term carp fishing tackle. Lures are usually intended to imitate the look and movement of real fish. This will accomplish one of two objectives. The fish will either see the lure as food or as a challenge to their territory. Either response is likely to cause the fish to strike. No carp fishing tackle box would be complete without lures.

Next we come to flies, which are similar in purpose to lures and yet are different enough in the world of carp fishing tackle to earn separate mention. An entire art form has grown out of the attempts to create flies that will fool a fish into striking. Yes the world of carp fishing tackle has spawned an art form.

No lure or fly would be useful in your collection of carp fishing tackle unless they are combined with a hook. Single hooks, triple hooks, barbed or not, a hook is needed on every lure or fly to ensnare and hold the fish.

Finally we come to floats and sinkers. Your carp fishing tackle is not complete without floats and sinkers which take on a special significance. Experienced fishermen know that different types of fish are best caught at specific depths. The wide variety of floats and sinkers will place your bait at the specific depth most commonly associated with the type of fish you’re trying to catch.

So now you know the most basic elements of carp fishing tackle. Of course we have only scratched the surface but you do now have the basics of carp fishing tackle jargon. Let these basics of carp fishing tackle be your first step on your journey into the wonderful world of carp fishing.
