by John Andrews

Some people might not think that choosing the right fishing line would be so complex but it is. You need to pick the line that’s best for the kind of fish you’re fishing for. There are some other factors that will come into play as well. The line you use is the absolutely most important item your tackle box.

This major role will determine if you have successful day fishing or go home without any fish at all. There are enormous amounts of available line on the market today; however choosing the right fishing line can be very easy as long as you know what you actually are looking for.

To be a good fisherman you need to understand the pros vs. the cons of the line you’re using. The line is your lifeblood. A lot of fishermen get confused about choosing the best fishing line. This is mostly caused by them being uneducated in the many choices that’s on the market today.

One of the more popular lines out today is the monofilament line. This line was produced in 1938 and was made by DuPont. This is a synthetic super polymer which makes textile fibers like silk, cotton, wool and rayon stronger. This line is used by many for basic lake fishing. If your going to be doing some deep sea fishing then choosing this line wouldn’t be a good choice when choosing the right fishing line because you’ll need a lot of line strength and this just doesn’t have it.

Braided line was the most popular of the strings before nylon was discovered. However, braided Dacron had very poor strength and the knots were just too shady to make a real difference. It has very little stretch so, if you are looking to catch a fish that is going to put up a bit of a fight, this string will not do the job.

Another popular polymer line is Fluorocarbon, this can be a great pick when choosing the right fishing line. This line has a identical refractive index making it practically invisible in the water. It won’t absorb water either. This will make the line last for a very long time.

Super lines will require special attention. Fluorocarbon is a super line. To get the best possible result when using this line we recommend a Trilene knot. Always make sure you wet the line when knotting it. This will give you a more secured knot. This will also keep your line from weakening over time. As with any line make sure you test it before using it. There have been many lost lures because people just don’t test the line before using it.

Choosing the right fishing line may seem more complex than it really is and will become easier for the years of practice. Always remember to choose the line that will best fit your needs when it comes to the type of fish you’ll be catching and water you’ll be in.

by Chipper Blakey

The most important piece of equipment to fly fishermen is the fly fishing reel. There are many different kinds of reels as well as there are different kinds of rods for different situations. It is not necessary to lay down a bunch of money for a new reel, although you can if you would like. A basic no frills fly reel will do in just about any situation, and if you do your homework and choose wisely, you will not have a need to replace it for many years.

Most trout fishermen strip their fly line manually rather than using the handle. Most fishermen will tell you that it is quicker to do it by hand, and you get more of a feel for the placement of your lure by keeping the line in your hand.

Depending on the situation that you are in, sometimes it is better to reel the line in manually and sometimes it is preferable to use the handle. When following a large fish most people prefer to use the handle for better control. Another situation to use the handle is when you have thick foliage and there is a chance of getting your line caught. If you are moving around in the water a lot, using the handle is a good idea.

Fishermen who reel their line in the most frequent are salmon fishermen. The reason of this is because more often than not, salmon fishermen will be in the water fishing. Trout reels are usually smaller than salmon reels, and are normally not as efficient in reeling line in as salmon reels are.

Technology is improving by leaps and bounds due to research companies like Sage in the fly fishing industry. Also fly fishing equipment is getting lighter with the use of graphite. A lot of your veteran fly fishermen prefer the older reels with a bit of weight in them to maintain the balance that they are familiar with.

If you have your eye on a new fly fishing reel, consider purchasing two so that you will have a backup. You will not want to have only one reel when it goes bad in the field. A trick to help you in your decision is to mark your line weight so there will be no guesswork involved. You will save yourself a lot of time when preparing for your fishing trip.

It is a good idea to get a storage bag for your extra fishing reels for protection. Most of the time backup reels find themselves in the bottom of tackle boxes for extended periods of time. Free reels in the bottom of tackle boxes can get damaged, and you might not realize this until it is needed.

As a salmon fisherman most people prefer to have different rods, which will save on time in having to change out reels and line. Most salmon enthusiasts will have two complete rod and reel setups, one for sunk line fishing and one for float rods.

Doing your research of what you will be fishing for and in what situations will move you one step closer in choosing the right Reel for your situation. There are numerous places on the web such as Ebay for choices on used fly fishing equipment.

One of the best bass fishing lures of all time has to be the plastic worm. The plastic worm has probably caught more fish than any other kind of bait out there. The plastic worm lets you skim for fish or you can bottom fish as well with these handy lures.

The plastic worm comes in sizes from 3 inches to over 10 inches long. They are available in array of colors. What ever the size or color you choose they all do the same thing and that is catching bass. They can be rigged different ways to make it more interesting when trying to catch the big one!

Crank-baits are another top favorite. They look like crawfish and bait-fish, 2 of the bass’ primary food sources. They work in all types of water conditions and can be quite the competitor in your arsenal of enticing lures.

Spinner-baits are known to catch a great deal of bass and they are very good bait for covering a lot of water quickly to find fish. In addition they tend to catch much larger bass than other lures on the market. They vary in style and come in an assortment of blades, colors and sizes.

Still used all around the world and arguably the best lure ever is the jig and pig.

Fishermen worldwide win a good percentage of tournaments every year by using the jig and pig lures. The lure looks like a crawfish from the bottom of the water. One of basses favorite foods are crawfish.

The most common lure is a buck-tail Jig. The buck-tail lure is responsible for saving many lives to this day because of its dependability. Most of all your survival kits include this lure. This lure is capable of catching bass under any condition and just might be for best friend in bad situations.

Topwater plugs will bring you excitement as the bass nearly dives out of the water for this one. The smashing splash of the bass is exhilarating and will find you reaching for the topwater lure more and more often if you are one who is into the excitement of fishing and the anticipation. You can get these lures in a wide array of colors and sizes and with enough practice you will be a topwater fisherman in no time flat.

Tailspinners are great for catching deep water bass. They are excellent at enticing the bass out of the deep and the bass will be hard pressed to resist having one of these for lunch.

Its clear that though there are many choices out today all will give you the excitement and thrills your looking for when it comes to catching the biggest bass every year.

by John Andrews

One of the most difficult and oldest forms of fishing is fly-fishing. Because fly-fishing is not as popular as it was years ago, there has been shortage in fly-fishing gear. Over the last decade fly fishing has started to become more popular again, due to this fact fly fishing gear is starting to become popular again as well.

Fly-fishing gear tends to have a dark side. There are many different components that one needs to fly fish properly. The fancy terminology that is commonly used and the rather steep prices fly fishermen have to pay for good gear, has all conspired to compose selecting the right fly fishing gear a rather difficult choice.

Some necessities of fly-fishing bear are, a fly fishing rod, fishing without a rod cannot be done. A fly reel, which is what holds the line and reels it in. A fly line is also a necessity because a person cannot catch a fish without a line.

These three items are absolutely necessary gears that have to be purchased in order to fly fish. Purchasing these items at a discounted price should be avoided. These items should be the ones that the most money is spent on, because they are what guarantees a good fly-fishing experience and the ability to fly fish at all.

A fly vest should be worn while fly fishing, this hold all eh flies and little equipment that is used while fishing, since a person is wading in the water when they are fly fishing. Wading boots should be worn at all times, that way the fisherman has good balance and is not getting his or her feet messed up. The last item is waders; this will protect the fisherman’s body, and not scare the fish away, being that it blends into the water.

Wearing the three tackles listed above are not necessary but strongly advised. These items will help to protect the fisherman and make catching fish a little easier. The wading boots are the most important out of the three, because they are what is in the water at all times.

A fly fisherman should carry with him or her a variety of different flies to cast and a tackle box. Fly-fishing sunglasses should be worn as well. The glasses will help the fisherman to see the fish and cast the fly correctly.

Fly-fishing gear is a lot of money and there is so much gear that is needed to fly fish. A person should be cautious when purchasing fly gear for a discounted price; they need to ask themselves why it is being discounted. The clothes that need to be worn during fly fishing do not need to be the best quality, cheap quality will get the job done.

When it comes to the reel and rod always consider why it is discounted. Sunglasses should be cautioned as well. Most fly-fishing gear will last a long time, but because it is so expensive a person should really consider what is worth spending more money on and what will last the longest.

You might be surprised to know that fly fishing can be a dangerous sport. Fly fishing can also have its rewards with relaxation being at the top of the list.

Bad weather, fishing tackle malfunctions, and snagged and tangled lines can cause a lot of grief if you haven’t prepared ahead of time for such challenges.

Tangled lines are one of the most frustrating things you may have to deal with when fly fishing along banks that have a lot of brush and undergrowth. Take immediate action to get your line untangled if you’ve thrown your lure into a brushy area. If it’s tangled on a small branch or twig sometimes the easiest thing is to break the snare off.

And if you get hung up on a really big log you may have to cut your line. Unfortunately this can cause other problems such as having a lure or hook floating in an area where a fish can get caught on the tangled line, but not be reached by the angler.

There are several items in your fly fishing gear that can have sharp edges. These can be hazardous if you are not careful. You can cut yourself or get a hook stuck in your thumb while removing it from your catch. A necessary part of your fly fishing tackle is a first aid kit with medicated spray and peroxide, paper towels, cotton, band-aids, and other bandages.

If you are bass fishing with live or frozen bait you can divide them in order to not run out before your fishing trip is over. A piece of a wiggly worm is better than no worm at all.

When you’re preparing to pack your clothes and fishing equipment for your trip check the weather. Knowing what the weather is forecast will help you to know whether you need warm, cool, or water resistant clothes. This can make the difference between a great fishing trip and a sour one.

Continue to monitor the weather, whether you are bass fishing from a boat or fly fishing along the shoreline. If a sudden storm comes up and lightning is starting to strike, head immediately to shore. Even on land, be aware of such conditions as darkening skies and flash floods.

Remember safety and preparation can mean the difference between a great fishing trip and disaster.

Successful surf fishing requires the right combination of skill, weather conditions and surf fishing equipment. Fishermen of all ages can enjoy learning to surf fish, and many locations offer lessons on surf fishing that cover topics such as surf fishing equipment, the fish to be caught, the water conditions and the skill’s basics.

A very important item to be covered during surf fishing lessons is the type of equipment and how it will function best for the ultimate fishing experience. Interestingly, there are few optimal pieces of surf fishing equipment, as everyone tends to have personal favorites.

Fishing rods work best in the surf if they are between 10 and 15 feet long, and the choice of rod length depends on what one is most comfortable with.

Tackle products such as weights, leaders, hooks and swivels are good to carry for a variety of feeders. Many surf fishermen use triple drop leaders, spider leaders or the pyramid leader. Once again, it is a personal preference and it is based on the type of fish that you are looking for.

It is often best to use bait caught from the same area when you are surf fishing a particular area. That is generally what the fish in the area feed on and what they generally will respond to. Consequently, you will do well to carry some smaller rods or nets in your surf fishing gear for catching the bait your prey prefers.

Moreover, landing nets are important to have when surf fishing. It is also best to have someone else along to help you bring the fish in with the help of a net. The specific net to use will depend on the type of fish that are in the area. Certainly, if your intended prey is a big fish, you will need to have a heavy-duty net handy.

Additionally, the type of water that you are fishing in determines the surf fishing equipment you should use, as good surf fishing is available in either fresh or salt water. Surf fishermen are known to enjoy fishing in rivers, lakes and other small bodies of water.

Surf fishing can also be great fun in the ocean and numerous fishermen surf fish for trophies in salt water. Fishing in the surf is a wonderful pastime for any age group in the family, as there are different sizes of prey to be found there. While wading through the surf, almost everyone will enjoy the sun sparkling on the water while waiting for the creatures moving beneath it.

by Craig Petersen

Fly fishing is a very old pursuit that has fed and entertained millions of people while it also provides the chance for a much-needed vacation. In today’s busy world, working people have many restrictions and pressures on their time; and, without some much-needed rest and relaxation, even the strongest are capable of getting exhausted.

Nothing offers a vacation as restful as fly fishing. There are no ringing phones, alarm clocks, screaming children or unappreciative employers. There is only the water, the beautiful wildlife, the fish and you enjoying it all.

Where else can you stand in water while marveling at the incredible wildlife around you? How about the rustle of the wind in lush trees and sweet smells of the wild flowers around you? That sounds so very wonderful, doesn’t it? Let’s go now!

Anglers or novices can take a fly-fishing vacation in just about any geographical location of the world. Fly fishing can be the fishing method of choice in rivers, lakes, streams, ponds and even the oceans. Most fly fishermen fish for trout, catfish, carp, salmon and much bigger fish in the sea.

Fly fishing is an exciting way to catch the fish you want. The fish are fooled with an enticing artificial fly or other insect on the water’s surface. Fly fishing requires a little practice, but it makes for a wonderful outdoor vacation.

Using a guide is especially recommended if you are on a tight time schedule. One can point you in the right direction from the beginning. If you need help, there are many fly-fishing guides who would be glad to give you some instruction. They know all the best places, water conditions and particulars of the sport.

There are many places to fish that offer great vacation packages for families who desire to enjoy the outdoors. These deals can include homes or cabins, fishing equipment, boats and lots of other amenities for a fly-fishing vacation. A popular trait about a fly fishing vacation is that it is in the outdoors, away from intrusive food and toy vendors or other distractions. Consequently, your children can enjoy free activities such as hiking, swimming, exploring, and fishing. Such a vacation that is reasonably priced, fun and relaxing can be a very welcome change from expensive theme parks and long road trips.

Many outfitters can be found at lakes, rivers or oceans that are in business to rent fly-fishing equipment. Therefore, you can try it all without the unnecessary expense of buying it. Not everyone will have a need for high end fly-fishing equipment, and renting some can be a great way to see what works for you. Even life vests and boats can usually be rented. There is nothing quite like being immersed in nature’s bounty while providing the food for your family that you caught and prepared. As a result, your kids will always remember the trip; and, that is a promise.

Although, I do not fish for carp regularly, I fished for carp when I was younger because the pond that was in my neighborhood was loaded with carp and catfish, but no bass. I learned a lot about fishing for carp and I even entered a local carp fishing tournament when I was a kid. The yearly carp fishing tournament was fun and I either won or finished second 4 years in a row. I never forget the kid that won first place because he won $100 worth of Carp Fishing Tackle equipment.

Most people do not believe me when I tell them that I didn’t have your traditional carp fishing tackle. All I used was sweet corn out of a can mixed with a little bit of vanilla extract. One teaspoon or tablespoon will work when mixed with a can of corn. You can also use frozen corn that comes in a bag. I didn’t use the frozen corn in tournaments, but it will work just fine and you can mix the corn in the bag that the corn comes with. If you use the canned corn, pour the vanilla extract into a sandwich bag with the corn and shake it up.

Use a small to medium sized hook, and fill the hook with corn. A short-shanked hook is preferred and 4 to 6 kernels should fill up your hook. Add enough weight to get your bait out there, set your rod down and wait. Carp love corn and they will hold onto the corn a little longer when it has a touch of vanilla added to it. This will result in more hookups. Carp can blow out your bait instantly, but it happens less often when you add the vanilla extract to the corn. If you add too much vanilla extract, you will not catch as many fish. Just use a teaspoon to a tablespoon and see how it works for you.

The internet has made a wonderful impact on the fishing catalog industry and shopping online for all sorts of fishing commodities. In my opinion, it is one of the greatest inventions of the twentieth century. Goods that were formally in limited supply in certain areas are now freely available everywhere.

First -Rate Equipment, Customer Service and advice is now available to everyone on a level not seen for several generations. It brings back the good old days of walking into a shop like Ambercrombie and Fitch, where an extremely knowledgeable salesperson would personally guide you in the selection of the proper gear for your desires, and not just try to sell you what is one the shelves to get rid of it (and you). The internet has allowed business to keep a low overhead, keeping the prices down. While there are many good online retailers of sporting goods, a few really stand out.

In 1961, Dick Cabela ran an ad in a few outdoor magazine classifieds to sell a few flies he bought from a furniture store. He received many requests, so he began to market flies, and other outdoor gear and fishing catalogs by direct mail. Dick and his wife Mary ran the business from their kitchen in Chappell, Nebraska. The business grew, and by 1969, they were occupying a 50,000+ sq, foot building in Sidney, Nebraska. By 1998, they had moved toa 120,000 sq. foot building with office space for more than 500 employees, and even this was not big enough. In 2002, the Cabelas World Headquarters was completed, with over 250,000 square feet and thousands of employees. The backbone was, and still is, their catalog sales. Every year, over 120 million catalogs are mailed out to over 120 countries. Cabelas also operates several retail outlets across the country, that are as much wildlife museums and education centers as they are stores. In 1982, Cabelas Adventures was born, and has become the #1 Outdoor Consulting Agency, with referrals to some of the best guides in the world, top outfitters and dream hunting and fishing vacation packages.

In 1992, their Online Department went live, now with a website that has their entire catalog output, hunting and fishing news, guides, advice and 24/7 customer support.Cabelas now even has their own TV Show! Cabelas continues to hold to the belief that the Customer is #1. They continue to offer top quality equipment, clothing and advice at the most reasonable price possible.

In the late 1960s, John L. Morris began selling bait from the back of a Brown Derby Liquor Store owned by his dad, in Springfield Mo. His business became so successful that by 1972, he had incorporated it as Bass Pro Shops. The business continued to grow and in 1974, the first Bass Pro hops catalogs were mailed out. The business flourished and soon became one of the largest mail order sporting goods retailers, rivaling even Cabelas. Mr. Morris continued to expand the product line and services .
