by Paul Mancini

No fisherman can win with sheer talent alone. No matter how talented a fisherman is, if his equipment is not good enough, his chances of landing a consistent haul will remain slim. That is because his equipment will hinder rather than help his ability. Just as a tennis player needs a great racket, the same goes for a fisherman’s fishing pole.

Fishing is a great sport that many people find enjoyable. It is always a great challenge to get an elusive trout to strike the bait, but casting for hours while wading in a cool stream can be quite relaxing. Regardless of the challenge and the relaxation that fishing offers, the ultimate goal of fishing is still to catch some fish. Barring some bad luck and circumstances that are really unfavorable for fishing, a good fishing rod is a necessity for a good fish.

If you are a beginner at fishing, it’s perfectly all right to use a simple fishing rod and reel – nothing too snappy and nothing elaborate. If you’re just getting your feet wet with this great sport, you should consider employing a fishing guide to give you a few pointers. You may also garner a tip or two on which fly rod to buy.

A simple fishing rod is good for those just starting out. Once you have gained a few experience points with this form of angling, you might want to consider a better fly fishing pole that is designed for more advanced users, a fly rod that will really get your game going. In this case, how do you choose a fly fishing pole that is just right for your needs? In order for one to make this decision, you need to know what kind of fish you’ll be attempting to catch. Different types of fish are caught using different length fly rods and different weights of tackle.

Flexibility is another trait to consider when selecting a fly fishing pole. It is important that your fly rod is flexible, something that can withstand the weight of the particular fish and something that will not spring back at your nose when you are fighting against a struggling fish. When shopping for a fishing pole, do not hesitate to hold it in your hand and make a few false casts to see how it performs.

Once you’ve found a fly rod that you think is right for you, go ahead and buy it. A good fly fishing rod is an investment, and if you choose well, it can last you a lifetime if you maintain it properly.

If you’re still not too sure just what kind of fly fishing pole you should purchase then go ahead and buy a couple of secondhand fly poles. Once you have found the right fly fishing rod to invest in, you can always sell your secondhand rods or keep them as backups.

As we’ve already said, a good fishing pole is a good investment that will give you a lifetime of angling enjoyment. But that will only happen if you take care of it properly. Maintaining a fly rod is simple – it only requires regular cleaning and oiling.

To clean your fly rod, you start by removing the reel from the rod and washing the reel in warm water and drying it thoroughly. After that, get a screw driver and unscrew the reel plate so you could get a good look at the internals inside.

Once you have accomplished this, remove all the debris you find inside the reel with a few cotton tips. Be certain that you have cleaned every bit of dirt out. Only then, once the reel is clean, oil the gears inside the reel and replace the reel plate.

Fly fishing is a truly enjoyable hobby, but to get the most enjoyment out of it, you need to use a fly fishing rod that works well for you. When you have already invested in a nice fly rod, protect your investment by maintaining it regularly.

Some people might not think that choosing the right fishing line would be so complex but it is. You need to pick the line that’s best for the kind of fish you’re fishing for. There are some other factors that will come into play as well. The line you use is the absolutely most important item your tackle box.

This major role will determine if you have successful day fishing or go home without any fish at all. There are enormous amounts of available line on the market today; however choosing the right fishing line can be very easy as long as you know what you actually are looking for.

To be a good fisherman you need to understand the pros vs. the cons of the line you’re using. The line is your lifeblood. A lot of fishermen get confused about choosing the best fishing line. This is mostly caused by them being uneducated in the many choices that’s on the market today.

One of the more popular lines out today is the monofilament line. This line was produced in 1938 and was made by DuPont. This is a synthetic super polymer which makes textile fibers like silk, cotton, wool and rayon stronger. This line is used by many for basic lake fishing. If your going to be doing some deep sea fishing then choosing this line wouldn’t be a good choice when choosing the right fishing line because you’ll need a lot of line strength and this just doesn’t have it.

Braided line was the most popular of the strings before nylon was discovered. However, braided Dacron had very poor strength and the knots were just too shady to make a real difference. It has very little stretch so, if you are looking to catch a fish that is going to put up a bit of a fight, this string will not do the job.

Another popular polymer line is Fluorocarbon, this can be a great pick when choosing the right fishing line. This line has a identical refractive index making it practically invisible in the water. It won’t absorb water either. This will make the line last for a very long time.

Super lines will require special attention. Fluorocarbon is a super line. To get the best possible result when using this line we recommend a Trilene knot. Always make sure you wet the line when knotting it. This will give you a more secured knot. This will also keep your line from weakening over time. As with any line make sure you test it before using it. There have been many lost lures because people just don’t test the line before using it.

Choosing the right fishing line may seem more complex than it really is and will become easier for the years of practice. Always remember to choose the line that will best fit your needs when it comes to the type of fish you’ll be catching and water you’ll be in.

by John Collinburg

When people visit the Florida everglades for the first time, their initial thought might be nothing but swampland. But the fact is the Florida Everglades is one of the most jaw dropping wildlife scenery, and to most bass fishermen that have been there, is there favorite place to fish for bass.

One of the reasons the everglades is favored among bass fishermen, because the surrounding waters provide excellent largemouth bass fishing. Some might even argue that these are the best waters for bass in the United States. You will see that the Everglades is more than just bass fishing though, with the thousands of species of fish it is home too, along with many other animals that you will not find anywhere else in the United States.

Because of the size of the everglades, and the amount of alligators that populates it, a bass guide might be a good suggestion for the first time visiting angler. There are thousands of miles of canals and over a million acres of land, that would take a lifetime to find the hottest bass holes.

Also, employing a guide means a visitor to Florida doesnt have to personally purchase a state fishing license; he/she fishes under the auspices of the guides licenses. A licensed guide will soon have a bass fisher just where he or she wants to be: Navigating the channels in search of the lushly vegetated flats where literally hundreds of hungry bass are looking for dinner.

When you are on the water, even the novice fisher will find that casting a line generally results in hits not just from trophy size largemouth but from feisty peacock bass as well. Largemouth bass over fifteen inches long and weighing in at more than five pounds are not uncommon in Everglade waters. Anglers who like a good fight will get it from the largemouths smaller but hard scrabble peacock cousin.

At the park of the Florida Everglades, they encourage strongly that you practice the catch and release method for bass. You can take some home, maybe hang a couple of largemouth bass on your wall, but do not keep more than needed and help preserve the United States largest wildlife park.

The Florida Everglades can get real hot during the day, and depending on what part you are fishing in, you can get attacked by thousands of mosquitoes. So make sure that you pack plenty of sunscreen and mosquito repellent, sunglasses and hats are also encouraged to help keep the sun from draining you.

Every person who fishes has their favorite type of bait. It probably comes from successfully using the bait on several occasions. Then the result? It’s a great bait.

Crawfish was my bait of choice when I was in Missouri. You just couldn’t beat them for trout or a small mouth bass. But I haven’t had much luck finding crawfish in other places. But I will say this, if you can find these little crawdads as they are called in Louisiana, buy and use them. Crawfish are a great way of attracting fish.

I like using live bait when I can. Live minnows are probably one of the most popular live bait fish around. But unless you’re working from a boat, it’s a pain lugging the bait bucket.

Live worms have long been the subject of comedy routines. People just don’t know how to put a worm on a hook. When a gang hook is used a worm stretches out and looks natural. The fish don’t get suspicious and you catch more fish.

Some people won’t have anything to do with live bait. Don’t know if they are squeamish or just lazy. Really doesn’t matter. Some of the newer synthetic bait is just amazing. And in some instances I can say the synthetic baits are coming darn close to live bait. Now synthetic bait comes in every shape, form and bait you can think of, and some you probably haven’t thought of. Synthetic bait offers convenience and the ability to pick up and go fishing without having to stopping by a bait shop.

You know when it comes down to choice it’s really about fishing and not just talking. You can talk about bait, debate the merits of this type vs that type. But without fishing you’ll never be a good fisherman. So try out various baits, but get out there and fish.

There are many different fly fishing knots you might use while you are out in the water. Some of the different knots include the Albright knot, Arbor knot, Blood knot, dropper loop, nail knot, and the improved clinch. There are different reasons you would use each of these knots.

Albright knots are employed in joining together your fly reel backing line and your fly line. Remember as you tie this knot to wind your loops neatly around the loop of the larger line to ensure that it will pass through your guides easily. Some fishermen will coat their Albright knots with rubber cement which will make it more secure as well as easier to pass through your guides.

An Arbor knot’s name makes much more sense once you know that the fishing reel is sometimes called an Arbor. This knot, therefore, is used to attach line to reel. While tying an Arbor knot, use the second overhand knot and wind the loop twice around the arbor before making that first half hitch. Doing this increased friction; ideal for polished reels. This is an easy knot to learn and is a standby for the fisherman.

The blood knot, another of the most important fly fishing knots, is used when you need to join two lines which are roughly equal in size. For instance, you would use this knot when joining sections of leader or tippet. There is more than one way to tie this knot, the best being to overlap the ends of the lines you are joining and twist them together about ten times. You can make a hole in the center of these twists and pass one end the opposite way through the hole. This knot, if tied correctly will be symmetrical in the middle. This is also an easy knot and will come in handy quite often.

The dropper loop is another one of the fly fishing knots that allows you to avoid tangles. This creates a loop in the middle of your leader and provides an attachment point for you to put an additional fly. This loop can be made by wrapping around the overlap point as you hold it with your fingers. This loop should appear symmetrical on both sides of the loop.

The nail knot is another one of the fly fishing knots you might need to use. This is most commonly used to tie two lines of different diameters together. You will thread the smaller line through the loops using a straw. It can also be thread using a nail or with a needle. This is a smooth and small knot which passes through the guides easily.

There are many different fly fishing knots you might decide to use. You should learn many of these different knots because there are many different circumstances you will need to use them.

Most of these knots are easy to tie and use and you will find yourself using them regularly. Practice some of these knots before you go fly fishing.

by Craig Petersen

For a truly rewarding experience, try fly fishing. You can step into another world when you are fly fishing. Actually, you don’t need to leave the planet or have an out-of-body experience; but, when you are fly fishing, sometimes you get such a feeling.

Since you can’t fly fish at your house, in your office, or in a city, you have to visit the wild. There, you will see some of Mother Nature’s vast treasures – the rivers, lakes, and bountiful mountain streams. Noisy crowds, busy people, and demanding schedules are just not allowed in places where you can get in touch with wild wonders.

Some individuals will think, “What a wonderful idea!” Others may feel that this is just what they need. Unfortunately, most people have no clue as to how to begin. Consequently, obtaining the services of a fly fishing guide is a terrific way to make your fishing experience a great one.

Anyone who wants to have an extraordinary fly fishing adventure needs a fishing guide. It does not matter if you have never fished or done fly fishing before. Whether you are new to fishing or you are a third generation fisherman, you can still benefit from a fly fishing guide. It is not even important that you may be staying local or that you will travel to a distant location.

Here are reasons why one would want to hire the services of a fly fishing guide: Beginners or novices can benefit greatly from a guide’s experience. Guides are generally experts at showing you areas where to fish, and they also can be useful for giving valuable fishing advice.

Whether you go on an overnight trip, take a day class, or bring a guide along with you to a remote destination, many of these experienced professional anglers will not only improve your current fishing experience, but they can advise you on techniques for you to build on as you progress in the sport of fly fishing.

Many people work an average of 40-50 hours per week as well as possibly spending another 10-12 hours on their personal interests or hobbies. Just think about how much time you would be spending on developing your skills as an angler if fly fishing were your occupation as well as your personal interest and hobby,

Consider the sites you would have time to locate and explore. A fly fishing guide’s workweek might consist of several days camping and fishing at a new, hot spot. Even if you have fished more than twenty years, it is a good bet that you would not have had the amount of time and opportunity to discover even half of what professional guides may have found.

It is possible that you may initially balk at the prices a personal guide charges, but consider this. You will have already spent hundreds of dollars on equipment, accessories, and gear, but you may only have a very limited amount of time to go into the waters after your fish. Consequently, it follows that you should make the most of your experience by benefiting from the services of a guide who can lead you where you have never been, guide you to where the fish are jumping, and possibly even give you some tips that could really improve your future experiences fly fishing.
