I have been using this reel for a year now. Dont let the price fool you, i have caught everything from perch to 30 pound yellowtail with this reel. Its stood up to all the abuse and still casts smooth. I expect to fish with this reel for years to come

Purchased the 2000 last fall, used it about 12 times doing inshore saltwater in florida. Had to have it repaired three times already: first time for tight/hard drag, had it cleaned and adjusted; 2nd time for the spring on the bail broke, had it replaced and finally, the anti reverse function did not work. Must of got a lemon. Looking to buy the Battle 3000 or 4000 soon.

I bought this reel for surf fishing in Southern Cal. Most of them people I fish and communicate with use Shimano, but I thought I would be differerent, plus I own a Slammer and like it. For the price I think it is great. It has lasted me through my first season with no problems. I have dunked it once and thrown it another time. I hand this reel to the shimano fans and they are impressed by the smoothness. The drag seems good, but I haven’t hooked into anything big enough to put it to the test yet. Perfect in my opinion for a light surf fishing outfit, it is currently paired with a shimano convergance 12’6″ L rod and spooled with 6 lb fireline crystal.

This reel is not like those. I ordered two Sargus 6000s, and right out of the box they are real smooth and seem like great reels. 6 months later there are coatings peeling off the drag knob, one of them has a tiny broken spring that makes the reel totally inoperable, and Penn says they won't have that part for at least 2 more months. Chinese Crap, Not what you would expect from Penn, January 21, 2011

I take good care of my reels and I have some older Penn spinning reels that are still going strong after years of use. This reel is not like those. I ordered two Sargus 6000s, and right out of the box they are real smooth and seem like great reels. 6 months later there are coatings peeling off the drag knob, one of them has a tiny broken spring that makes the reel totally inoperable, and Penn says they won’t have that part for at least 2 more months. Thanks Penn, great job!

I hope Pflueger never catches on and starts marketing this and the Trion line because prices will be sky high when the die hards find out how smooth and tough these reels are. I've used the same Trion for about 6 years now and aside from a few scratches from abuse, it is still like new. The drag stays put and cleaning it takes all of 5 minutes. It has a similar feel to the Trion so I use it at the coast and the Trion in the mountains. Can't beat the duo. I prefer it over my Orvis Hydros (which is a very good reel) and the bonus is that I’m not afraid to use it. I hope Pflueger never catches on and starts marketing this and the Trion line because prices will be sky high when the die hards find out how smooth and tough these reels are. I’ve used the same Trion for about 6 years now and aside from a few scratches from abuse, it is still like new. The drag stays put and cleaning it takes all of 5 minutes. It has a similar feel to the Trion so I use it at the coast and the Trion in the mountains. Can’t beat the duo. You just don’t need any more.

This is an exseedingly nice fly reel very smooth and light, the other review is about a spinning bait reel made by Pflueger not the President fly reel!!The drag on this bargain of a fly reel is very smooth and precise, I purchased one of these for my spey rod and I really like it, it preforms well beyond my expectations, you would have to spend four to five times the price of this fly reel to even come semi close to features and preformance of this fly reel, as for the other high end fly reels you are just paying for a name with the president you just get pure preformance and that is what I want when I fish for salmon,steelhead and bass. Nothing too special. I've used it a few times without any problems with the reel itself. But the fishing line it came pre-spooled with is completely worthless. It has so many nicks and abrasions on it that it breaks at every chance. The reel seems to work ok. Nothing too special. I’ve used it a few times without any problems with the reel itself. But the fishing line it came pre-spooled with is completely worthless. It has so many nicks and abrasions on it that it breaks at every chance. I put new line on it after the third use of the supplied fishing line.

One of the best reels that used to be produced was the Johnson Century close faced reel. I have sevral from 6-10 years ago and they still work fine. Recently I bought the latest version of the Johnson Century Reel and used it one day and it simply fell to pieces on me. It will cast out but you can't reel your line in without it catching. I thought maybe it needed oil (although a brand new reel should not need it), so I oiled the bearings and it still doesn't work. Despite having 5 ball bearings it is cheaply made and not worth buying. Unfortunately there are few close faced reels on the Market, so I am using my old reliable Mitchell 200 and Shimano (neither of these are available today). Use your hard earned money and buy a good old fashioned Zebco 33 but don't waste it on the latest edition of the Johnson Century. Keep fishing!
