One of the best bass fishing lures that an enthusiast can use is a plug called a Bomber. Depending on where you are fishing you may want to consider using the Mega Bait plug, its a little heavier than the Bomber and you can cast it a little farther. The Mega Bait plug also has a little rattler built inside of it.

If you choose to use Bombers and Mega Baits it is recommended that you fish with a yellow lure during the day and a black lure during the night. If you really want to get the bass in the boat try using a teaser and be prepared to catch more fish than you have in your life.

Keep in mind whenever you are fishing a swimming plug it is best to fish them at a slow pace. This will cause a natural fluent motion. Although it will take a little practice once you get it right you will notice your rod pulsating when your reeling the lure back in.

Rebel Wind Cheater, SRO Prime Minnow, and Danny

There are those times when you want to cast a little further, I recommend using a heavier type plug. Try the SRO Prime Minnow which is a 1 3/4 OZ lure, you may also try the Rebel Wind Cheater which weighs 2 OZ, and my favorite the Danny which weighs a whopping 2 1/4 OZ. All three are great bass fishing lures.

Gibbs Pencil Popper, Stillwater Smack It, The Knuckle Head

Knowing when to use the right lure is half the battle. When you hit the lake and you see some top water activity or birds flying around top water feeding off of critters this is a sign that you need to use a Popper. If the birds are feeding from things on the top of the water, the bass are close by. Whenever you are fishing a Popper, reel it in – in short burst. This jerking motion of the lure on the top of the water will appear to the bass as a small injured creature. To a bass this is easy prey and they will come up from below and engulf the popper.

All About Striped Bass Fishing

For the first time that you would hear about striped bass fishing, you would probably think of the factor that drives people to engage in such activities. You would say that only those people who have an idea on what it is would be amused of this kind of fishing. But who says no to fishing? If ever you would then surely your missing one great experience in life!

People have been striped bass fishing for many years. People bass fish for many reasons. Some of them enjoy fishing regardless of what they catch. While others fish because they want to catch a lot of stripers and some would fish for food. Of course every person who is into fishing has the same problem – finding fish and catching them.

In 1879, Stripers were first introduced to California from the East Coast. The stripped bass are also called rockfish because they usually dwell under the rocks.  They look very much similar to a white fish. These species moves around in groups.

So when you are fishing, and if you catch a striped bass then there is a good chance that you will be able catch more. This kind of fishes likes to eat smaller fish, and other coruscations.  Stripped bass fish are the favorite meal of blue fined tuna and sharks.

Striped bass are migratory. Most adults after spawning in rivers move into the salt water for summer and fall. Many of them feed from one bay to the other. In late fall & winter some fish moves upstream to the fresh water.

These bass fishes are often caught using small artificial lures. There are numerous techniques available to pursue the sport of bass fishing.

For beginners, it is advisable to gather more basic tools to get started. Also it is suggested to start with artificial bait until the angler has a better understanding of the unique characteristics of the bass fish. Both amateur and seasoned anglers use Spinner bait. The biggest stripped bass caught is 53 pounds.

Of course to catch stripped bass you must know how to locate them, but this is great challenge to most anglers because there are so many factors that need to be determined to be able to locate one.

Basically the first thing that you should learn in bass fishing is to know how to read Maps. This way, it would be easier for you to take on the appropriate location that is good for bass fishing.

You need to remember that bass fish like Largemouth bass, smallmouth bass and stripped bass do not have the same characteristics.

This is another factor in catching bass fishes. These creatures have their own distinctive traits, so you must learn their nature so that you would be able to know where to locate them.

The weather condition must also be considered, when it comes to striped bass fishing. It is very important to know that the most practical places to look for active bass is just after cold fronts and during early spring and late fall periods. The depth or the hollowness of the water also serves as a factor to know a good location.

Once you are aware of their habitat and have mastered the techniques in catching then you are ready to go on your first stripped bass fishing.

Who would have ever thought that Motown would be have so many great bass fishing lakes. Many fisherman never think to plan a fishing trip to the state of Michigan. Most have never heard of Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, Saginaw Bay, and several inland lakes that offer some of the best small mouth bass fishing that you have ever seen. If you are inspired by this article and are considering planning a fishing trip to Michigan, you should know that the time to go is from April through December and the seasons provide a wide array of fishing opportunities for every type of angler. 

You will probably receive the best results if you plan your trip in the early spring through the spawn. This has proven to be the most exciting time of year in my personal opinion. Many fish are visible, and they just love baits like the super flukes and spinner baits. Those lures are almost hypnotic to them for some reason… Only if the fish could talk. 

In Michigan’s lakes the fish are normally found in the deeper waters as they settle into their summer routines. By the time mid summer hits they are schooled and feeding like crazy. From my personal experience the bass fishing at this time of year will yield you anywhere from twenty five to forty fish per day. The average fish weighs almost seven pounds. 

During the fall of the year the small mouth bass start feeding aggressively. You are guaranteed to find the bass in the shallow parts. Some of the largest fish ever caught in Michigan lakes have been caught as the ice over approaches. This is when the bass are looking to feed. There is a benefit to scheduling bass fishing trips at this time of the year, because there is little boat traffic. You are pretty much guaranteed to have most of the hot spots to yourself. I must warn you that you need to have your cold weather gear. If you are a fisherman that are not use to this type of weather conditions you may want to reconsider. Michigan during the cold weather season isn’t for everyone although the reward is well worth it. 

You have a wide variety of fishing options available to you throughout Michigan, particularly for small mouth bass fishing. For example The Grand Traverse Bay, Thunder Bay, Bay De Noc just to name a few. Those lakes offer untouched fishing opportunities for the real fisherman. You will be able to return with stories of “I caught one this big”. You may want to consider the inland lakes for Michigan’s small mouth bass. 

While your there you may want to consider catching a few walleye fish. The Detroit River in the spring is where they all migrate from Lake Erie. 

If you are interested in doing some white bass fishing I recommend to go around May through mid June and hit Lakes Erie and St. Clair. This is also a great time for top water bass fishing opportunities. At this time is where spawning white bass are making their way up the river. These fish are eager to bite at anything resembling a minnow so this makes fishing simple and easy during this time.

Time after time, with ultralight bass fishing, I get asked about what lures work best, what colors are best, how to work this lure or that lure. Every now and then, I even get asked about some expensive scam lures, and breaks my heart. Trust me, I had all of the same questions that you had when I began. I have taken the time to break down 5 known classic baits that catch fish, period. These baits have been around for a long time, and are here to stay.

Up to bat first is our all time favorite, and a true classic, the plastic worm. This bait was concocted up back in 1949 by Nick Creme in his basement. These baits have been putting more fish in livewells longer than most of us have been alive. In most areas you fish, you can get away with a 4incher in either the black/blue (junebug) or green/black flake colors.

On the list next is the Rapala Floating Minnow. Rapala makes a jointed model of this bait, and when reeled slowly on top of the water, it acts like a spook lure. The faster you reel though, makes it dive a little deeper, topping out around 1 foot deep. If the fish are in a feeding mood, this is my go to lure. You can just let this lure sit as well, often called deadsticking. If you know that you are over a fishy area, let the lure die, and sit for 15-30 seconds or so, and give it a couple twitches. This will get their attention. The smaller sizes work best on ultralight rods.

The next one is the classic grub. The good old plastic 2″ grub. It doesn’t look like much, a little round body with a curly tail, on a jig head. To a fish though, it is exactly what they want. A slow moving, chunk of food. You can fish it deep to shallow, fast or slow. Try burning the tail across the top of the water like a buzzbait in the morning or evenings. I use green pumpkin with a chartreuse tail, or even black. Black jig heads on both.

Fourth on the list, is the Booyah Pond Magic 3/16 ounce spinnerbait. We all know that spinnerbaits catch fish. Swim them along the bottom, just fast enough to let the blades flutter, jig it, burn it on top, or wake it just below the surface. These things catch fish, plain and simple. I like the firetiger color for muddy water, and the white with copper blades for stained water. I don’t fish much clear water, but if you do, try White/Silver/Chartreuse mix, with silver blades.

Skirted jigs are known around most bass club circles as big fish catchers. This goes for ultralight bass fishing jigs as well. You get a lot more fish with ultralight techniques, however, jigs still weed out the smaller fish. There is just something about them. Especially fishing in ponds, these are the big fish slayers.

So I have been ultralight bass fishing for a long time now, and one question that comes to mind pretty often is how does rod length really effect our fishing? I could come up with a million answers, so could anybody, but I did think of a list of things that I know you should pay attention to when you are about to buy a new pole.

Some people believe that you must use a short rod in the 4 1/2 foot to 5 foot length. They believe that this length gives you the most whip, and backbone for fighting the fish. This is a common misconception however.

Stout rods have a great backbone on them, and are nice for fishing in areas where you might need to pitch or flip because of the debris. These rods will give you the best accuracy of any of the rods, but the casting distance is limited greatly.

Rods used in ultralight bass fishing that are around 5 and a half feet, to 6 feet long are generally considered neutral or balanced when you talk about distance, accuracy, and backbone. These rods do generally well in all 3 categories, provided you go with a good manufacturer.

If you are in the need for an ultralight flipping stick, then these rod lengths are perfect for you. Especially the 6 footer, this length of rod, with a stiff backbone, is great for getting into the thick stuff, and yoking smaller fish out of there. If the area is known to carry smaller 12″-15″ fish, take this length with you.

Fishing rods in this category are for general use as well, based on the attributes of accuracy, distance, and strength. Knowledgeable anglers will be able to tell the difference between the different lengths, however, most fishermen will not be able to tell.

The longest of the ultralight rods, 6 1/2 foot and longer provide the longest distance for casts. This is good for throwing spinnerbaits or topwaters, you can get them going so far that it is hard to see the little baits!

These long rods kill your accuracy however, which is why they should be used for open water casting and swimming baits. You can really burn spinnerbaits and buzzbaits with these long rods, not to mention unloading your spool from casting so far!

When it comes to ultralight bass fishing during the summer, most people usually only go in the mornings or evenings. This is typical, as it is the most comfortable time to go. They don’t realize that they are missing out on some prime fishing time!

One of everybodies favorite ultralight bass fishing styles is using topwater baits. So yeah, name somebody who doesn’t love a big blowup, especially on a small lure! When people are talking about the subject, poppers, and buzzbaits are usually the top of the conversation. People have caught more fish with these 2 lures, than with any other topwater baits combined.

The prime time to use topwater lures is early in the morning, or later in the evening. When the clouds are moving in thick, and the sky is getting grey, you should also break out your topwater lures. You can get away with using fast moving lures during the mid summer, but you just have to pick the right time.

Water temperatures in smaller reservoirs (re: retention ponds) that we like to fish in warm up to temperatures that the fish don’t feel comfortable in. They typically won’t exert a lot of energy chasing down a bait until the water cools back down.

When the sun is high in the sky however, the fish can’t look overhead for their meal. They don’t have eyelids to protect themselves and their eyes from damage. It is easier to stay in cover, or look down for your meal, until the sun settles in. This is when I head for the worms and jigs.

Jigs and worms are two of the best baits for when conditions present you with a bright sunny sky. After all, you don’t get to pick when you fish! Worms and jigs can be slow rolled on the bottom, bounced, hopped, jigged, create a ruckus, just keep testing to find out what the fish are looking for. Remember to bring along your patience!

It is becoming widely known that fishing kayaks are being bought up like never before. Especially in times like we are in today, people are finally realizing that the big bass boats that go 60mph are just not necessary to catch fish. A lot of people are finding fishing kayaks as a way to get on the water, and more often than not, are catching more fish than they ever did off the big bass boats.

Fishing kayaks allow you to sneak and creep through the water, without being noticed by fish. You are also able to draft incredibly shallow, so you can even get back through the muck that the big boat guys are afraid of. We used to do it on our bass rig, but we had to wade fish the shore to get anything done.

This worked, for the most part. During spawning season, these fish don’t typically abandon their bed, so walking through the water won’t spook them. Any other time, good luck, or get a fly rod. But with fishing kayaks, you can see the bed from a farther reach, and are able to sneak up onto it. Fishing kayaks are incredibly stealthy, and this is helping their sales more than hurting it.

Another example of why people are buying so many fishing kayaks lately, is because of the ease of storing it. You can’t put your bass boat in the hallway upside down, or any boat for that matter. With 4-5 fishing kayaks, you can easily mount them or hang them upside down. This many kayaks allows you to take your entire family, and maybe even a friend.

Owning more than a few boats, my fiance believes that people just don’t need this many. Fishing kayaks do teach people how to know which lures or fishing setups to bring along for the day, as you can’t bring everything with you, it is a quick lesson.

Outrageous gas prices effect people buying fishing kayaks heavily. I have blown a grand on more than one occasion, just boating around on the weekend with my family. When we finally got rid of it, it hurt me to think about how much time and money went into it.

It is super expensive running big boats in todays economy, in other words. When gas was approaching $5 dollars a gallon, you can’t imagine how much we spent on just a weekend in fuel. Trolling motors were useless after an hour.

In todays economy, times are extremely tough on people. They are finally figuring out that kayaks will bring you in touch with the outdoors, and you don’t have to be rich to get into it. You can pick up a lightly used fishing kayak for cheap, put a few modifications on it, and resell it for the same price or more later when you are ready to get a nicer kayak.

What the hey, it’s more comfortable anyways, right? What you don’t realize is that you just cost yourself some of the best bass experiences you could have imagined.

When the sun is high overhead though, the fish cannot look up for their food. If they did, they would go blind — they don’t have any eyelids to protect them like we do. This forces them to stay looking down, and seek overhead cover. This is when I break out my jigs and worms.

The jig and worm are perfect for when the sun is shining bright, because they can be bounced slow or fast across the bottom, stirring up the silt and attracting attention. Finding fish with these baits is a slow going method, but you have to be patient if you want to be successful and catch more fish anyways!

Don’t make the same mistake I made, I purchased gear that seemed great but was totally improper for the business at hand. With the horde of reels and rods that are available, not to mention the millions of baits, fishing knives, fishing nets, line thickness and other fishing tackle; how could a first timer not make a few incorrect and pricey purchases?

We started our series on freshwater fishing tackle with the reel; already reviewed were the spincast and spinning reels. Now we will address the Escalade of the fishing universe the Baitcast Reel; also referred to as baitcaster, baitcasting, casting reel, and a conventional reel.

Baitcasting reels can manage stronger lines and lets you cast longer distances than spinning and spincast reels in the same size range. Anglers often use fishing line in the 14- to 17-pound-test range.

The design of the baitcast allows for on target casting, getting the lure precisely where you want it. They use very sturdy drag systems to slow larger, stronger fish and are meant to be used with heavier lures.

The baitcast reel is the favorite reel for catching Striped Bass, Barramundi as well as other large game fish. Because of its casting accuracy it is great for fishing in water where snags can be a problem or for casting below decks and walkways.

Baitcast reel has a revolving spool with the line going in the same direction as the line as it works down the fishing rod. They have a center pin and the disks are attached by a series of outer pins that displays the line. Some are built partly from composites, but most are still stainless steel, often with brass components in certain sections.

The baitcast reel attaches on the top of the fishing rod, for this reason it is more awkward to handle and requires more training than either the spincast or spinning reels. For this reason it is not a great entry level reel for young children or the novice angler.

Also its higher cost can make it cost prohibitive for the casual weekend fisherman who will only fish from time to time. Finally since it is mainly a casting reel it is much more reel than the “cast it and leave it” angler needs.

An excellent example of the baitcast reel is the Pflueger President LP Baitcast Reels, priced at under $150 and loaded with the features. It has nine double shielded stainless steel ball bearings and a one-way clutch instant anti-reverse bearing, rugged one-piece aluminum frame, aluminum handle side-plate, and six-pin adjustable centrifugal brake system.
